Let’s step back a little from the true luxury and sample what happens when you make every effort to emulate your bigger brother’s riches. Land Rover has produced recently the new Discovery and Al Tayer Motors Dubai kindly dropped me the keys to the new sport.
I am a lifelong fan of Land Rover. They have been to the moon and back. They are a part of my life having driven Land Rover during my 18 years of service. I am impressed at the go anywhere attitude of the cars an attitude that seems to me to be a very positive example to us all. You can do almost anything in a Land Rover at any time of the year.
Tech improves every year. We see more and more computer controlled devises to control most functions of the car. Well Land Rover has many of these and the Discovery’s bigger brother the Range Rover pretty much has them all. It therefore goes without saying that its little brother wants some of the action. Well the new discovery comes quite well equipped, mostly hidden away safety features such as a pedestrian airbag but any car pool Dad would love the simplicity of the car and its intuitive functions, while feeling very safe and confident, that the family gets from a to b without harm.
It is a shame that Land Rover have stopped the defender series. It was my favourite. Not too much tech and washed inside and out pretty much with just using the jet wash. I mean that Land Rover now concentrates on the family wagons with computers everywhere. Good or bad, I shall leave that up to you. But I always thought that having the diversity of the Defender in the brands family of cars kept the strength in the brand, after all it’s a car that is popular across the world for its go anywhere attitude.
I am quite impressed with this car. You could say it was an Evoque for the chaps. It can also be seen as the door to the luxury SUV market place. Land Rover have taken the design of the old iconic model, with its quite boxy look and chiseled away at the edges, to come up with a very attractive and fresh looking car. Smooth lines and some nice option wheels make for quite a sophisticated look, James Bond needs a weekend drive. Close in relation to the Freelander, which this car effectively now replaces and highlighting elements of the Range Rover models. Those elements not only show on its exterior but on the interior also.
Driving the new Discovery was impressive. Ride a little firm on the suspension for my liking and in comparison to the Range Rover Sport but never the less quite an impressive ride. Maybe to suggest, the suspension was made to enhance its more masculine and go anywhere feel. This car as noted does basically carry some of the under pinning from the Range Rover Family of cars. It is why it has such a smooth ride, it’s the reason it feels like it will go anywhere and moreover why it feels so strongly put together. The interior has firm but comfortable seats. Not to wide that they can’t be comfortable to all sizes of waist. Plenty of room for the tall among you if to sit in the rear seats too. The quality of the dash and the equipment is very good. Hints once more from its bigger brothers.
The New Gen Discovery is marking the way forward, with its distinct new styling and obvious Land Rover group DNA, while keeping up the challenge of go anywhere. Would I buy one? Well yes, this car does pretty much everything you want in a car. Its comfortable for all, has a reasonable amount of space in the rear. Engine options are great for towing and load weight and further more will be happy in all weathers and pretty much any terrain should you need that.
